LC-FID

The LC-1 is an innovative instrument featuring a novel interface from DTEKT ltd which enables the advantages of flame ionisation detection to be successfully used with liquid chromatography.

This new detection system integrates solvent pre-heating, a fully temperature programmable column oven, a nebulizer and spray chamber developed by DTEKT Ltd and a specifically designed flame ionisation detector.

Water whilst at room temperature, is generally viewed as a polar solvent, with a high dielectric constant. When water is heated at temperatures above 100°C, under sufficient pressure for it to remain as a liquid (sometimes called "superheated" or "subcritical" water), its dielectric constant can be lowered to values similar to those of organic/aqueous mixtures typically used in HPLC. Under superheated conditions, water can mimic the elution characteristics of the organic/aqueous mobile phase and can therefore be considered as a potential replacement.

The system uses the latest high temperature HPLC columns and a temperature programmable column oven to produce water only chromatographic separations. A high-performance nebulizer / spray chamber combination is then used to convert the mobile phase into a fine aerosol that can be introduced into the flame ionization detector. The droplets are processed in the flame to produce ions from organic carbon. These are detected as a current flow to produce an output signal. This gives users a unique opportunity to detect compounds on their LC system that were not previously possible with UV detection.

The LC-FID will be available later this year
